Consider Updating Employee Handbook

By: Rob Lynn

There are a variety of employer- employee incidents that emphasizes the importance of regularly updating your company’s handbook along with their underlying policies and procedures. State & federal employment laws are changing quickly along with the technology influencing how employees work today. With rapid changes in employment law and technology, it has become ever more important that employers update their handbook at least once year.

An employee handbook will define how the employer wants employees to be treated and the expectation of employee behavior.  The employee handbook does not need to include every detail of current workplace law or explain in great detail the employer’s policies, but the document should be worded in a concise and careful manner so that employers maintain flexibility and employees have a clear understanding of corporate policy.

Here are some of the key topics that should be reviewed & updated in 2016:

  • Social Media and Data Privacy

  • Reasonable Accommodations

  • Wages & Payroll

  • Leave Benefits

  • LGBT Rights

  • Legal Marijuana use – electronic Cigarettes

  • State Specific Law Changes

Being proactive in the review and revision of the employee handbook will help business owners minimize the headaches that employee issues can easily cause.  Since 1988, Total Team Solutions has been helping our clients by developing and updating their employee handbooks as necessary.
